Anolon Potato Masher

Tools Reinvented

The simple masher in the hand of Jacques Pepin is an entirely new tool. In his book, Fast Food My Way, he mashes tuna, incorporate vegetables and olive oil, flips the masher about, fills a tomato and lunch is done. More on Jacque and the masher...

$12.99 AT MACY'S

Jacque used the iconic wire s-curve version of the masher. The featured disc version from Anolon performs well in general and can be used for more than just potatoes. At $12.99 and with extra features as the ergo handle and hanging hook it is a good value in a category with prices that range from $10 to well over $40. Beyond potatoes, turn to the masher to mix and mash rough-hewn bruschettas, guacamole, tapenades, pates and spreads. The disc masher, versus the wire masher, is an excellent substitute for the pastry knife for cutting butter. Choosing the handheld masher over, say, an electric mixer frees you to work anywhere in your kitchen, not only in reach of an electrical outlet. This is important if your work space is not only limited but inconveniently located. Anything human-powered is the right choice if you are being mindful of how often you are plugging in. It is wise to avoid the double disc and spring-loaded version mashers if multiuse is a priority. These do a great job of mashing potatoes but the complicated design doesn’t work for extra uses.
