And a sustainable way to get them home

This is my favorite time of the holidays. When we truly slow down and it's about being, not doing. I find myself collecting my energy for the next year and assigning meaning. For 2009, a portion of my disposable time, energy and money will go to four organizations that hold meaning for me. Clean Water Action, for doing the heavy lifting to restore the original intent of the Clean Water Act and protecting waterways such as the Chesapeake Bay pictured here. Share Our Strength for the momentum they provide for hundreds of local food charities. Two cycling organizations are near and dear to me. World Bike, an international non-profit of bike designers, which was started by the folks at Xtracycle with the idea that bikes for transportation and income-generation should be designed and produced collaboratively with each developing community. Locally, I will support Transportation Alternatives. This pedestrian and cyclist advocacy group brought us miles of bike lanes in 2008 and is making walking in New York a safer proposition, particularly for senior citizens. If any of these organizations hold meaning for you please consider supporting them today with a year-end contribution and include them in your plans for 2009.

Best Wishes for a Peaceful New Year

City Cooking Classes

There's hardly a cooking enthusiast who hasn't  dreamed about taking a class.  Think about booking near home or on a weekend trip. Go the city of Brotherly Love and after you do a lap around Philadelphia's historic sites, head over to  Foster's Homeware in Old City Philadelphia to peruse the latest in kitchen gear and take a class in their lifestyle section called apartment 399. Upcoming cooking classes include: Southern Comfort, Tastes of Latin America or a Mediterranean inspired lesson. You can fast track a gift of cooking classes by sending a gift card from Foster's to your culinary friend and let them choose their favorite. Read on for other city cooking classes, Many have email gift certificate options.

Ride an Xtracycle

You've converted to reusable grocery bags, now convert your bike into

an Xtracycle. If you know someone who wants to reduce their impact an Xtracycle will change their lives. It will eliminate tons of car trips and maybe that gym membership too. Take nearly any bike you already own and turn it into an Xtracycle with the Free Radical Conversion Kit. Or you can score a ready-made Xtracycle. With the peapod accessory kids go along for the ride. Ask the friendly folks at Xtracycle anything about embracing the bicycle lifestyle, that's what they are all about.

Alessi Pasta Pot

A perfect group gift for the small kitchen cook on your list. The sleek looks are only part of the story. The design relies on a old-time cooking method used by olive pickers in the field. The dry pasta is mixed with the sauce and a small amount of water is added. The water is absorbed similarly to risotto making. This is modern one pot cooking.

And other Spanish food gifts

If your gifts have to go through airport security, think small. How about saffron, organic and sustainable caviar, Spanish paprika, small jars of Marcona almonds and La Tienda gift cards. Clicking and Shipping? Look into the big size of Marcona almonds, as rich tasting as macadamia nuts but good for lowering cholesterol. Perfecto para la pequeña cocina.

WK Mini Quiche Trio 40percent_edited-1.jpg

Mini Quiche Trio

After considerable hoopla about the Whole Foods value tour, I did my own research. Sure, the organic house brands are a way to save, but the frozen case is full of good value. These tasty mini-quiches could easily be mistaken for handmade. The flavors are spinach, mushroom and three cheese. They cost somewhere between -- "Homemade is cheaper" and "Caterers? Not this year."

Look Forward and Back

If you are rethinking your flair in the kitchen, you aren’t alone. People first cut back on restaurant visits and now, it seems, many of us are adjusting how we are cooking at home. Beautiful food and healthy food is still pursued, but it must be frugal too. Americans are said to waste on average 14% of the food we buy and in the UK it is as high as a third. Two enlightened resources of information on reducing food waste are Wasted Food by freelance writer Jonathan Bloom for ongoing news and innovations and Love Food Hate Waste, the well organized UK food waste education campaign. Read on for more on this topic…
